Guests at the 22nd annual Faith in Action dinner on June 11 will be celebrating the community efforts of Sister Phyllis Tierney and several other nominees. The annual dinner which highlights the good works of people working in faith communities is sponsored by The Greater Rochester Community of Churches Faith in Action Network. The Faith in Action Network is an interfaith group that gathers congregations and people from diverse backgrounds to build relationships and support initiatives based on spiritual and community values. The SSJ Justice and Peace Committee nominated Sister Phyllis for her efforts in peace and justice.
For the past seven years, Phyllis has served the Congregation and the wider community in her role as Coordinator of the SSJ Justice and Peace office. She has been present at Church Watch in Sodus, spent time at a migrant camp in Cayuga County and has been actively involved in migrant issues to advocate and facilitate changing the system.
For the past two years she has joined with other agencies and faith communities to work on the issue of Human Trafficking. In 2012 she helped coordinate the local “Nuns on the Bus” tour, a project of the Rochester Women’s Religious Congregations. Sister is also the editor of“JUST US”, a bi weekly SSJ Justice and Peace publication which goes out to a wide audience and encourages greater understanding and action on justice issues.
We commend Sister Phyllis for her good works for justice and peace which flow from her deep prayer life and spirituality. If you are interested in learning more about the SSJ Justice and Peace committee, click below.
