Sister Mary Cumbo (formerly Sister Rose Maren)
“I entered the Sisters of Saint Joseph from St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Rochester after graduating from Nazareth College in May 1963.
“As a postulant and novice, I taught freshman math at Nazareth College and at the Motherhouse. My teaching career continued at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Rochester, St. Mary's School in Waterloo where I also served as Principal, St. Pius Tenth School in Rochester and Nazareth Hall Middle School. I then ministered for10years as Assistant Faith Formation Coordinator at St. Pius Tenth Parish. In 2003 I became Assistant Coordinator of our Motherhouse on French Road where I had the opportunity to work with our resident Sisters and priests as well as staff. Following this ministry, I did volunteer work at St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center and Monroe Community Hospital and then worked part-time as Concierge/Receptionist at the Jewish Home of Rochester for 10 years. It hen became Co-Director of our SSJ Associates program and am currently serving as Co-Coordinator of our Motherhouse.
“I have enjoyed all of my ministries–teaching, administration, faith formation, serving our Motherhouse residents and ours Associates, working at the Jewish Home, and volunteering at Monroe Community Hospital and St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center.
“Seeing the ‘spark’ of understanding in teaching math, being part of sacramental preparation and celebrations in faith formation, listening with compassion to our senior adults and those who live with illness have all been blessings for me in my various ministries. The faithfulness of God's love, the support of our Sisters in community, the joys and blessings of ministry and the love of family and friends have all been graces for me throughout these60 years.”
