Inspired to Serve

In June 2024, Sister Susan Nowak, William Shannon Chair Professor of Religious Studies at Nazareth University, traveled to India with two Nazareth students to spend three weeks learning about a ministry that serves destitute women, children and men. Maher Ashram, or Mother’s Home, located in Pune, India, has helped thousands of people by providing spiritual guidance, shelter, and sustenance.

Mother’s Home founder, Sister Lucy Kurien of the Sisters of Holy Cross, was a featured speaker during the Nazareth University Shannon Lecture Series last March. After hearing Sister Lucy’s story, students, Nusrat Chowdhury and Treasure Briggs, and Sister Susan, were inspired to travel to India to learn more about Mother’s Home and opportunities for the Nazareth community to help and learn.

During their visit, they worked with Sister Lucy and her staff, tending to the needs of preschool and kindergarten age children. They also responded to the needs of abused women aged 18 to 21, gaining insight into their everyday lives. Sister Lucy’s aim is to help these young women of various castes, religions, and regions across India to transcend the social, ethnic, and religious differences that separate people across Indian society. Ms. Hirabegum Mulla, president of the Mother’s House Board of Trustees and of Muslim heritage, shares Sister Lucy’s vision, telling Sister Susan, “I am so happy God sent me here to accompany these people. I say so often: ‘Love is my religion.’”

Nazareth is currently developing more formal opportunities for internships and clinical hours with Sister Lucy and her work at Mother’s Home.
