Thomas Merton 101
A local women’s group that draws from two local parishes had the opportunity to learn more about the life of esteemed theologian Thomas Merton. Sister Monica Weis, a Merton scholar, was the invited guest for the "Women-in-the-Spirit" gathering at Church of The Transfiguration on April 3. The group is made up of women from Transfiguration and St. Catherine's parishes who meet monthly for theological presentations and discussion. Sister Monica presented on "Thomas Merton 101" — a look at Merton's life through various geographies he experienced (France, England, NYC, Gethsemani KY) and how these landscapes influenced his prayer. The presentation included time for personal reflection and sharing.
Lorna Davi, an SSJ Associate, is on the Advisory Board for the group and came up with the idea to ask Sister Monica to speak. “I fell in love with (Thomas) Merton's writing years ago, and when I got to know Sister Monica and learned she authored several books about him, I purchased those books and felt a connection with him. I knew the ladies would be interested in learning about him, his faith, and his talents.”
