Welcoming the Holy

Here we invite you to take time for yourself in personal prayer. The following spiritual reflection offers words and images which we hope will evoke for you an experience of God.

Reading

Exodus 20

“I, the LORD am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me.”

Reflection

In the Bible stories of the Exodus journey, there are pauses along the way. At these times, God reminds Moses and the journeying believers, just who God is. This week’s reading from Exodus is one of those times.

Moses is struggling to lead. How can he call the Israelites to hope? How can he get them back on the road? They have become idol worshippers. They are lost in quarrels and complaints. He fears they will become captives of their doubts.

Then, God breaks through on Sinai saying:

“I, the LORD am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me.”

Remember. Remember. Remember, my people. I am the one who saves. I brought you out of Egypt. I can reach you even in chaos and cloud. I am the one whose love sustains you in the desert. I am the one who calls you not servants but friends. Act like believers.

Closing Prayer

St. Richard of Chichester

Thanks be to thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits thou hast given me, for all the pains and insults thou hast borne for me. O most merciful redeemer, friend, and brother, may I know thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly, day by day. Amen.
